In the business world, maintaining certain standards of appearance is important. How you present yourself determine how others perceive your reputation, education, intelligence and capabilities. Apart from influencing people, appearance can affect the performance levels of business. In a professional environment, presentation can serve as a basis of creating a positive impression and getting new workers onboard. Afro Textured Hair Believe me or not, even in this age and day, Afro-textured black hair isn't greeted with open arms in most work places. For example in a work environment that deviate towards conservative policies. However, if you are being discriminated, there is nothing to worry about, and you should know that there are other women like you who are being discriminated because of the same reason. You must agree with me that most dress codes doesn't allow mohawk hairstyles, or hair with unnatural colours. But at the same time, there are dress codes that do not allow women to have locks and braids at work. You must have heard of black women not being hired for a certain job, or being fired because of their braided extensions. Is that fair? No! I don’t think it is. So what should women with natural hair do? Work dress codes are something that you should always keep in mind before choosing a place of work or a hairstyle.

So if natural hair is allowed in your workplace, it is good to keep it simple. Don’t let your appearance leave a wrong impression on others, or become a land mine of potential distractions. Make your appearance by trying out some classic skirt-and-suit in a colour of your choice, and put on some accessories that match your suit. Keeping it simple like this might help others appreciate your natural black hair at work.

Some women have been successful in their careers with their natural hair while others have failed, and are constantly blaming natural hair for their failure. Even if discriminations exists the way it does, women should not conclude that natural hair is unprofessional. Here are a few reasons that can be used to justify this statement. The reality is that the skin of a black women or the shape of an Asian woman isn't considered as unprofessional. Hair, skin and shape of the eye are all natural physical characteristics. If someone insists that natural hair is unprofessional then he or she should be able to explain to us why the skin is not. It can be Styled Conservatively Although afros look amazing and lovely, all women with natural hair know that it cannot be allowed at a workplace. Depending on your work environment, you might be sometimes forced to pull your hair down your face. You can also be in a workplace where styles such as twist, curly fros and braid outs are considered professional.

It Breeds Paranoia If you fail to get a certain job, it is not healthy to walk around saying that you failed to get the job just because you are natural. There are other reasons that might have caused the failure. You might be unkempt, or you may have behaved unprofessionally during the interview. Want A Big Fro? Here’s How You Get It

One of my trademark styles is a huge fro. Typically I’m a protective style wearing natural but every now and then, I like to show off the hair that I work so hard to maintain – and nothing says ‘I love my natural hair’ like a big, beautiful fro! Many naturals believe that you must have long hair to achieve a fro and that couldn’t be further from the truth. At any length and with most textures, with a few simple tricks you can have a big fro of your own. Check out the steps I take to rock my fro below. Preparation If you’re planning to wear a fro that will stay huge the entire day, you must prepare at least two or three days in advance. For instance, if I want to wear my hair big and beautiful on Friday I usually start working on it Tuesday or Wednesday. Style With a Fro in Mind After deciding what day I want to wear my hair in a fro, I then style with my fro in mind. I usually flat twist my hair in a circular pattern and lock the ends with a little cream or gel and roll them with perm rods or small flexi-rods. My Day 1 hair always comes out with tight, short curls and that’s fine (think about the end result). Just rock your shrinkage and get your outfit ready to compliment that fro you’ll have in a few days! Night-time Hair Technique is Important In order to achieve a big fro, your hair has to get bigger by the day. As crazy as it sounds, it’s actually what you do at night that matters most. My fro styles turn out the best when I use a technique called banding. Basically, I divide my curls (they haven’t become a fro yet) into about five total sections. I make ponytails that remind me of little girls with puffy ponytails and then I put elastics (some people use rubber bands) around my ponytails very loosely – loose is the key to maintaining the curly ends – and wrap my satin scarf loosely around my head. I personally don’t use rubber bands or elastics with the metal clamp on them. I like just plain elastic bands. Watch Your Hair Get Bigger Each Day Your hair will get bigger and bigger as the days go by if you use the night-time technique above and my natural hair secret weapon – an Afro-pik! Whenever I see un-relaxed hair I just can’t resist starring at it in admiration. I don’t know why or how but I just find it hard to keep my eyes off natural hair. I have to say that the reason we make excuses about natural hair is simply because we choose to be afraid and think that our natural hair is un attractive. Living in a society where straight hair is seen as more beautiful than kinky hair, we are not to blame but it is all a very wrong perception. There are people who in the day of today who still consider natural hair as un acceptable in the society. One man’s food is another man’s poison.

Natural hair is often termed as unkempt, unprofessional, ugly and so much more. But worry less for the world is changing really fast. So many women are opting togo natural standing strong against all the odds and making the choice to transform from relaxers, weaves and processed hair to being a natural beauty. Alarge part of the society now hire natural haired professionals along side others.

Natural hair is a journey of confidence and setting one’s own standards. As long as you know that you are beautiful and you are confident about your natural hair it should not worry you much about what others think about your natural hair. Beauty comes from within. Why go for natural hair;

· No more relaxers so I don’t have to fear that I will get scalp burns while processing my hair. · Relaxed hair thins out as it grows unlike natural hair that can be pinned into a curly ponyt ail. · Natural hair grows uniformly unlike relaxed hair that gets two textures as it grows. With natural hair you can embrace growth and not fear growth like the case with relaxed hair. · Natural hair guarantees long healthy hair because it protects the ends of your hair unlike the relaxed hair that thins out as it grows. · With natural hair you are free from dry scalp because you explore a wide range of products and wear new styles any time as desired. · Natural hair salons costs significantly less cash and time. It gives you freedom from salons unlike the case with relaxed hair where you visit the salon every two weeks. Natural hair is beautiful and you are beautiful too. Do not allow yourself to be easily deceived. It is the right choice, it is the way to go with no regrets.

He Doesn't Like My Natural Hair

By Patience Muia Many Afrocentric men I know are generally in support of women with natural hair but not without a catch. There is a recurring theme among men to uplift natural hair. Many men today love natural hair but after being told that our natural short curls makes us look like boys, you obviously don’t expect us to take that to be so kind or so light. There is a possibility that your man does not like your natural hair but there could be some reasons behind it as well. I also strongly believe that there are solutions to those reasons as well. For example it could be the style you are wearing on your natural hair that he doesn’t like. About this, there are so many things that you can do with your natural hair and have him liking it if not loving it. For example you could do; a) Twists b) Afros

c) Dreads d) Braids

Perhaps, the reason he does not like your natural hair is because you did not discuss with him before you transitioned or went natural. This could be a more serious cause especially if you are a one style person or you have been wearing the same style for years and suddenly changed without your husband’s knowledge. Communication could easily solve such issues. The good thing is that your man will eventually get used to your new hair style. He may end up liking it in the long run. I know that men can also find better ways of letting us know that they do not like our natural hairs tyles rather than being too harsh on us. If someone is so joyous about her hair freedom, don’t steal their joy. Try and share the joy they have. Hair is a big thing for many African and American women as well but men should understand that some of us need to worry about health and weight in relation to the way we do our hair. In the day of today going natural has become more of health. Division between the natural and non-natural hair communities is an over blown issue and another way for people to make something out of nothing. Let us feel confident in our natural hair. We should not feel like we are doing the wrong thing in going natural simply because our men don’tlike it the natural way. After all it is all about how happy you feel.
