Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a type of vinegar that is made from the cider of the apple. As well as being used as a salad dressing, weight management, and acne treatment it also has incredible benefits for use on our hair. The acids and enzymes in ACV kill a type of bacteria called bottle bacillus which is responsible for many conditions such as dandruff, itchy scalp, hair loss and often baldness. The bacteria clogs hair follicles enabling dry crusts to form that itch and flake.

Whilst many of the hair care products we use such as soap-based shampoos, hair colourants and bleaches are strongly alkaline, ACV on the other hand has a PH level of 2.9 which makes it more acidic. This is beneficial because our hair makeup has a natural PH of between 4.5 and 5.5, so rinsing with ACV after using these hair products helps to restore your hair's natural balance.

It’s no secret that being natural can be a little daunting and even a tad bit overwhelming at times. There are a billion products to choose from, a trillion gadgets that promise to do this or that and it’s easy to confuse what’s best for your hair. We’re not fans of wasting money and we want to keep you from doing just that! We’ve compiled a list of the five must-have styling tools for your natural tresses.

Afro-pik: As your hair grows, the Afro-pik will become your best friend. Trust me on this. It’s the best tool to tease your roots and give you that “big hair look” that all of us naturals love. Wide-tooth comb: Wide-tooth combs are the best! You can use these combs to detangle your hair while you’re washing it and to divide your hair into sections. It allows you to comb through your hair with minimal breakage/damage. Hair scissors: Since many naturals choose to style and care for their own hair most of the time, part of that maintenance includes trimming and dusting our ends. Using the right type of scissors is essential to the overall look and health of your hair. Keep a pair of these in your drawer. Detangling brush: The next must-have styling tool that naturals should have in their hair care arsenal is a detangling brush. Detangling brushes allow you to safely brush your hair and they also make your curls pop! I love the Denman brush but there are other options to choose from. Butterfly clamps: It’s nearly impossible for me to style my hair without using at least two butterfly clamps. Once you’ve divided your hair into sections, these clamps help secure them and keep them all distinct. Of course these aren’t all the tools you may need or require for your hair maintenance routine but we definitely believe these are must haves. Going natural is a lot like going back to school and learning a new trade or craft. You can't expect to be great at styling your hair and use all the right products if you don't study! We've decided to put together a little "cheat sheet" or glossary of natural hair terms, in no particular order, that you should learn and become familiar with (you'll see them all over natural hair websites and blogs) so that you can give this new journey your best effort...and of course to make it all a little less confusing. Check them out below and add any that we may have missed to our comment section. ACV: This acronym stands for "apple cider vinegar" and refers to using it as a final rinse on your hair after shampooing, but before conditioning. It is said to add shine to your hair. APL: This acronym stands for "arm pit length" in reference to the length of your hair. Banding: Banding is a method of stretching your hair. Gather your hair in one or more ponytails and wrap elastic bands around the ponytail in sections from the top of the ponytail to the bottom. BC/Big Chop: A BC or "big chop" involves cutting off all chemically treated portions or ends of your hair, leaving only natural-textured hair. BSL: This acronym stands for "bra strap length" in reference to the length of your hair. BSS: This acronym stands for "beauty supply store." CBL: This acronym stands for "collar bone length" in reference to the length of your hair. Clarifying: This is a cleansing technique that removes build-up (oils, products, etc.) from the hair usually using specific shampoos or rinses. Co-wash: Co-washing is when you use conditioner to clean your hair in place of shampoo. Dusting: Dusting is a technique similar to clipping your ends. The amount of hair that you trim/clip is so small, it looks like dust. EVOO: This acronym stands for “extra virgin olive oil.”
