Natural Hair Debate

The number of women opting to abandon chemicals and enjoy the freedom natural hair offers them is increasing fast. This has brought strong sisterhood within the hair community and divisions between those people with natural hair and those with relaxed hair.  Some people believe that natural hair refers to texture alone and has nothing to do with colour or length. People in this category consider weaves, straightening hair with hot comba and weaves as natural. Another category of people argue that natural hair is the original texture of your hair and therefore wigs, weaves and colour are unacceptable.

 

Others believe that black women should keep their hair natural in memory of the colonial rule as afros and dreadlocks were associated with military in that era. These people feel that keeping black women’s hair natural shows that they embrace political elements and reject European’s standards of beauty.

Other debates have come up like on the usefulness of hair and the purpose naturalhair serves. Some people feel that there is more to hair than just mere texture and curl pattern. Hair typing misguides women on hair care because they emphasize on one curl texture over another. Due to the fact that your hair looks like another does not mean that it will respond to products in a similar manner as the other. What do you think?

This has however been restricted by lack of information among women hence making them prefer relaxed hair. People withnatural hair opt to rely on strengtheners and relaxers to make them look acceptable and neat.

Natural hair is not versatile. Some of us think that natural hair has to be in afro state but there are so many natural hairstyles one can wear for example; two strand twists, Bantu knots, braids, cornrows, flat twists, coils, and locs.With short hair, versatility is somehow limited but as it grows longer you can enjoy trying out new styles.   Some white people think that the texture of natural hair symbolises the inferiority of black people. Natural hair in the society is mistaken to be dirty, unkempt and unattractive. It is now very clear that natural hair has gone mainstream. There are some myths that discourage women from going natural like; Natural hair does not grow This is a misconception because with proper care our hair can grow very long regardless of texture. Natural hair is expensive This is false. Only people with certain hair texture can go natural This has not even the slightest truth in it. I am sure that when a person goes natural he/she can never go back to the stresses of relaxers. Although natural hair needs a lot of patience, I love the versatility it has. With natural hair you can you can do things you could not do with relaxed hair. There are so many women in the red carpet wearing natural hair. Natural hair is not a trend.

At the time I didn’t even know what a product junkie was but looking back on those days of frantically trying to find something to make my hair “act right,” I definitely was becoming a product collector. One lesson I quickly learned was that everything will not work on my hair. Not only that, some products will work for a while and then suddenly they will not yield the same results. You can tell that your products are not working for you if they cause your hair to become hard, dry and/or brittle, leave flakes or any type of residue on your hair or it is left on anything that your hair touches.  Luckily there are a few things that you can do if you find yourself with products that are not working. Use the five tips listed below to find something that works for you and get rid of what doesn’t.   1. Try to find someone that you know or can find on YouTube who has hair that is similar to yours in texture and length. This is sometimes very hard to do, but it can be helpful when deciding what you want to try on your hair. 2. When I started coloring my natural hair, shampoos that contained sulfates no longer worked for me. Prior to me adding color to my tresses, sulfates were not a problem. Always check your product labels to compare the ingredients of the products that don’t work with those that do. 3. Swap products with friends or family members. This helps you save money while trying to find something that works for your hair texture. Simply exchange a product that doesn’t work for you with one that doesn’t work for them and you both get to try something new at no additional cost.  4. Observe your hair and get to know it better. Pay attention to what your hair likes and dislikes and how it reacts to the environment and weather. This will give you an idea of the kind of products you need.   5. Don’t get discouraged. Let me begin by telling you that there is nothing wrong with having thick hair. Actually to some extent it is a blessing rather than a pain. You should be proud of it because I am sure with thin hair it would be more of a problem as you'd have less to work with. I know thick hair could be hard to manage if you do not know how to handle it properly. You should be happy because thick hair can survive damage unlike thin hair. You can try taming your hair with twists, braids and more versatile styles. Although thick hair takes a lot of time and energy while detangling, drying and styling, everyone will admit that a thick afro bush looks pretty good dope. Here are some tips to help you manage your beautifully thick hair: Keep your hair hydrated  This plays a great role in making your hair look better and elastic. Try cleaning your hair with a sulphate free conditioner.  Keep your hair stretched This prevents your hair from coiling on itself so much hence minimising breakage during detangling. It also seals moisture from roots to ends. At night pin your hair in loose Bantu knots and cover it with a silk headscarf. Use quality products Ingredients play a great role. Natural oils fortify hair and protect it from heat. The more natural you keep your oils, shampoos and conditioners, the better. Hair cut Don’t assume this. You will not regret getting a hair cut because it shapes your hair to look better and less thick.
