Natural Hair Newbies: Terms you should know (A - E)

Going natural is a lot like going back to school and learning a new trade or craft. You can't expect to be great at styling your hair and use all the right products if you don't study! We've decided to put together a little "cheat sheet" or glossary of natural hair terms, in no particular order, that you should learn and become familiar with (you'll see them all over natural hair websites and blogs) so that you can give this new journey your best effort...and of course to make it all a little less confusing. Check them out below and add any that we may have missed to our comment section. ACV: This acronym stands for "apple cider vinegar" and refers to using it as a final rinse on your hair after shampooing, but before conditioning. It is said to add shine to your hair. APL: This acronym stands for "arm pit length" in reference to the length of your hair. Banding: Banding is a method of stretching your hair. Gather your hair in one or more ponytails and wrap elastic bands around the ponytail in sections from the top of the ponytail to the bottom. BC/Big Chop: A BC or "big chop" involves cutting off all chemically treated portions or ends of your hair, leaving only natural-textured hair. BSL: This acronym stands for "bra strap length" in reference to the length of your hair. BSS: This acronym stands for "beauty supply store." CBL: This acronym stands for "collar bone length" in reference to the length of your hair. Clarifying: This is a cleansing technique that removes build-up (oils, products, etc.) from the hair usually using specific shampoos or rinses. Co-wash: Co-washing is when you use conditioner to clean your hair in place of shampoo. Dusting: Dusting is a technique similar to clipping your ends. The amount of hair that you trim/clip is so small, it looks like dust. EVOO: This acronym stands for “extra virgin olive oil.”

Every Natural Hairstyle Isn't Workplace Acceptable!

In the business world, maintaining certain standards of appearance is important. How you present yourself determine how others perceive your reputation, education, intelligence and capabilities. Apart from influencing people, appearance can affect the performance levels of business. In a professional environment, presentation can serve as a basis of creating a positive impression and getting new workers onboard. Afro Textured Hair  Believe me or not, even in this age and day, Afro-textured black hair isn't greeted with open arms in most work places. For example in a work environment that deviate towards conservative policies. However, if you are being discriminated, there is nothing to worry about, and you should know that there are other women like you who are being discriminated because of the same reason. You must agree with me that most dress codes doesn't allow mohawk hairstyles, or hair with unnatural colours. But at the same time, there are dress codes that do not allow women to have locks and braids at work. You must have heard of black women not being hired for a certain job, or being fired because of their braided extensions. Is that fair? No! I don’t think it is. So what should women with natural hair do? Work dress codes are something that you should always keep in mind before choosing a place of work or a hairstyle. So if natural hair is allowed in your workplace, it is good to keep it simple. Don’t let your appearance leave a wrong impression on others, or become a land mine of potential distractions. Make your appearance by trying out some classic skirt-and-suit in a colour of your choice, and put on some accessories that match your suit. Keeping it simple like this might help others appreciate your natural black hair at work.

How to Achieve a Big Afro

Want A Big Fro? Here’s How You Get It

One of my trademark styles is a huge fro. Typically I’m a protective style wearing natural but every now and then, I like to show off the hair that I work so hard to maintain – and nothing says ‘I love my natural hair’ like a big, beautiful fro! Many naturals believe that you must have long hair to achieve a fro and that couldn’t be further from the truth. At any length and with most textures, with a few simple tricks you can have a big fro of your own. Check out the steps I take to rock my fro below. Preparation If you’re planning to wear a fro that will stay huge the entire day, you must prepare at least two or three days in advance. For instance, if I want to wear my hair big and beautiful on Friday I usually start working on it Tuesday or Wednesday. Style With a Fro in Mind After deciding what day I want to wear my hair in a fro, I then style with my fro in mind. I usually flat twist my hair in a circular pattern and lock the ends with a little cream or gel and roll them with perm rods or small flexi-rods. My Day 1 hair always comes out with tight, short curls and that’s fine (think about the end result). Just rock your shrinkage and get your outfit ready to compliment that fro you’ll have in a few days! Night-time Hair Technique is Important In order to achieve a big fro, your hair has to get bigger by the day. As crazy as it sounds, it’s actually what you do at night that matters most. My fro styles turn out the best when I use a technique called banding. Basically, I divide my curls (they haven’t become a fro yet) into about five total sections. I make ponytails that remind me of little girls with puffy ponytails and then I put elastics (some people use rubber bands) around my ponytails very loosely – loose is the key to maintaining the curly ends – and wrap my satin scarf loosely around my head. I personally don’t use rubber bands or elastics with the metal clamp on them. I like just plain elastic bands.  Watch Your Hair Get Bigger Each Day Your hair will get bigger and bigger as the days go by if you use the night-time technique above and my natural hair secret weapon – an Afro-pik! My Natural Hair Is Too Kinky

Posted by HMH Blogger By Patience Muia I know that hair that is too kinky could be a bother but there is something that you can do to correct the situation. If you have not given it a try yet, using castor oil, olive oil and coconut oils can save the situation a big deal! Combine these three products with Shea butter too as it is also so natural.

Try drying your hair on a lower heat setting. Too much heat can cause the most damage to your hair. Make sure that when drying your hair, you hold the dryer about 8 inches away from your head if possible. You could try using a round barrel brush on your hair while drying it as well. Do this by taking a small section of your hair and placing the brush against where your hair meets your scalp and running the blow-dryer along the other side of your brush (so that your hair is between the blow-dryer and your brush). Lastly, if you are willing to spend a lot of money, a new Paul Mitchell straightener is the best way to go if you want your hair to be pretty much perfectly straight. It is very costly. If you know anyone who has access to a salon store (i.e.your haird resser) who could maybe get the straightener for you at a discount price, try that first. This specific straightener is usually $150, but I got mine for about $90 since my mom is friends with a hair stylist running her own business.

When using any kind of straightening spray, hold the bottle upright away from your sectioned piece of hair about 4 inches and spray a light mist. Set the bottle down and straighten the section of the hair from root to tip. Give these tips a try and see what changes will come along with them.
