How people might perceive you after the Big Chop

It is totally beyond your control to stop people from imagining reasons as to why you went for the big chop. Here is how some people might perceive you:

1. You are crazy

People may tend to think that a person is an insane mind cannot chop off long and pretty hair. Even after lengthy and detailed explanations, people may still not get the sense in your actions.

2. He is mistreating you

Cutting one's hair is very liberating. Rumour mongers will be tempted to think that you have either broken up with your man or you are in bad terms with him. They may think that you chopped off your hair to mark an ending or beginning of a new relationship.

3. Undergoing a mid-life crisis

When women are going through tough and trying times in their lives, we find that their hair is very prone to a big chop in order to mark that period. The good and encouraging thing is that chopped hair will always grow back in little or no time.

4. You lost your hair

Other people may also think that you have lost your hair to balding, damage or even accidents.

5. Health issues

Sadly, cutting off our hair may not work well for everyone. The final look may be very disappointing and unfair for some of us. As a result, some may end up looking like they have very serious health problems. Logically, people should not confuse your choice to chop off your hair for health problems. People’s assumptions should in no way affect your confidence in your short hair. It is your duty to let your self-esteem come from the deepest part of you and let it be evident in your face and actions.

The Importance of a Hair Regimen

Posted by HMH Blogger When I first decided to wear my hair in its natural state, I had no idea what I was doing. After watching a million YouTube videos over the course of two or three weeks and heading to my bathroom with a pair of hair scissors and cutting off all my long, permed hair in April 2011, all I knew was that I could wet my hair and it would stay curled for the rest of the day. What I didn't know was that if I didn't consistently use certain products and styling techniques, my hair would be a dried up mess. What I didn't know at that time was that my hair wasn't at its full potential because I wasn't using a consistent regimen. A hair regimen is a process that you perform on a regular basis to ensure the health and growth of your hair. Regimens are usually done weekly, but naturals have been known to incorporate bi-weekly steps into their regimen as well. Are you confused yet? Let me explain further. Every Sunday is wash day for me. I start by sectioning my hair into six blocks and detangling my hair with a wide tooth comb. If it's the first Sunday of the month, I'll proceed by washing my hair in sections with a sulfate-free shampoo and following up with a leave-in conditioner. I usually style my hair in flat twists with perm rods on the ends on wash day and before twisting I will detangle more and apply my favorite blend of oils. Every other day or every two days, I use the LOC method (liquid, oil, cream) and every three months I trim my ends. I also wear a satin scarf or bonnet every night to protect my strands while I sleep. So those are things I incorporate into my overall regimen. Shortly after year two of my natural journey, I got extremely lazy with my regimen. I stopped following the steps I'd normally used, I stopped trimming and dusting my ends, I sporadically slept with my satin scarf and guess what? My hair suffered! Big time. My ends were splitting, my hair thinned out on both sides around my ears, and it broke at the same rate of growth, so I didn't retain any length from Year 2 to Year 3. As soon as I started following my regimen consistently again, my hair began to thicken and grow, and it's visibly healthier. I'm still repairing some of the damages I suffered, but I'm here to tell you that keeping up with a regimen is important for the health and growth of your hair. Conduct research on some of your favorite natural hair figures and copy their regimens if you'd like. It's a start to helping you develop your own, and you'll learn more about your hair and what it likes/doesn't like as you go. Happy Styling!

Common Natural Hair Breakage.

Posted by HMH Blogger By Patience Muia  Going natural can give you a break from heat appliances. Sometimes back when I had relaxed hair, I was a slave to my flat iron and blow dryer. Every weekend I found myself shampooing, conditioning, flat ironing and drying my long, black hair. This process takes a lot of hours, and it is also tiresome. When I was transitioning, rocking a wash and go was my motivation. But now that I have natural hair, I have realized that breakage is a common problem. It is completely preventable. Here are some ways through which you can prevent breakage in areas around nape, crown and edges.

Areas around Edges

Have you ever had breakage around the temples? Also known as breakage at the hairline. It is commonly caused by excessive pulling and rubbing in the area. Traction alopecia can also be caused by chemical burns, while wigs, weaves and extension can also be the reason. To easily prevent such breakage, avoid hair clips and bands. Avoid anything that can cause breakage, you can also use castor oil since it can stimulate regrowth. If castor oil doesn’t work for you, you might consider going to a dermatologist so that you can be able to determine the true cause. Areas in the Crown Breakage around this place might be difficult to deal with. If you are suffering with hair issues in the center of your head, this area will always be the driest, the hardest to comb, the kinkiest and breakage comes easy.

Breakage around the Nape

The usual culprits are the collar, scarf or any part of clothing that rubs that area. This breakage is more common in the winter when it is necessary for you to bundle up. The remedy for this breakage is wearing satin accessories and wearing silk. Alternatively, you can wear a satin bonnet so as to protect yourself against winter wear.

Truth about Natural Hair Discrimination

1. Devout Naturals

These are women who pass on all chemicals from relaxers and colour treatments to certain product ingredients. 2. Technical Naturals

These women no longer wear relaxers, but rock blowouts and weaves happily on a regular basis. Apart from the two, there are those who don’t mess with weaves but rock colour. There are also those who live with protective lifestyles with box braids, crochet braids and other trendy styles. But the truth is that some naturals are being eliminated or discriminated in the natural hair community. Initially, going natural was a way of breaking free from European beauty standards and starting a journey to embrace one’s natural hair. But a lot has changed recently, and now some natural hair sponsors ignore certain types of natural hairstyle while at the same time praising a certain type. Women with the type 4, kinky textured hair seems to be experiencing texture discrimination in and outside their workplace. If you haven’t realised it, the wavy and curly girls dominate the branding in products marketed to natural hair. Look across the beauty industry and you will find that kinky and coily hair naturals are being under-represented and are not being celebrated as compared to the others. From my experience of running multiple natural hair focused media accounts, I think that images of kinky textured naturals doesn’t get much shares and likes compared to the others. This might be just a new type of natural hair discrimination.

Reasons Why People Fail in Their Transition to Natural Hair

Some have two trials before success, while others have up to eleven trials to finally embrace the new hairstyle. From experience, I have realized that it is usual to find people struggling with natural hair especially in the early stages. Here are some reasons why transition may be difficult and regarding how to handle such difficulties. • You are not comfortable with the reflection in the mirror Some people were lucky enough to grow up with natural hair and therefore they have no problem seeing themselves with natural hair. If you were relaxed at a young age, it is obvious that you are used to the image of straight hair. If you were used to relaxed hair, you might find it difficult dealing with the idea of embracing natural hair as it appears to be a relapse to childhood. If you need a smooth transition, you have to spend time looking yourself in the mirror so that you can learn to embrace your new hairstyle. Accepting that new image might take seconds for some while others might end up struggling with it for years. • Negative Feedback from Family and Friends

You should learn to deal with people who keep on telling you how your hair look like especially if the comments are negative. It is your hair and therefore you should be proud of it. It is always your choice to select your reaction to negative comments, and there are different ways of dealing with such people. You might decide to ignore them or simply educate them. Educating the person is the best option especially if the person is a close friend or family member. • Lack of Proper Research

Information about natural hair is available on many blogs, vlogs and forums. It is not always a good idea to stick to some small set of information, and emulating someone else’s routine might make natural hair transition totally difficult.
